SIMPLE TIPS: Hiring the Right Contractor

GET THREE BIDS

If you’re thinking of remodeling your home, you should get at least three bids from companies  that routinely do the type of work you’re seeking.

GET RECOMMENDATIONS

Get recommendations from other homeowners who hired the contractor you’re considering. Be sure to ask: Would they hire the contractor again? Were they able to communicate effectively with the contractor when issues or problems arose?

GET CREDENTIALS

Ask about credentials. Find out if the contractor is properly licensed and insured, and if he or she has been doing contract work for at least five years.

Spring Home Maintenance Guide

Spring Home Maintenance Tips
Information from houselogic.com

Key maintenance tasks to perform:
Monitor your gutters and drainage - During the winter, a lot of debris an other junk can get stuck in your gutters and affect the drainage of the gutters when spring rolls around.  Key things to look for when inspecting your gutters are blockages, bending or damages to the gutters, and places where water is being expelled incorrectly. Most simple gutter damage can be easily fixed.

Inspect your roof and chimney for winter damage - Make sure to look for loose bricks on the chimney and decaying material in your fireplace. If you suspect a problem, call a roofing contractor or a chimney sweep certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America for repairs.

Schedule your spring air conditioning service - You are probably going to be using your air conditioner a lot this spring and summer.  It's important to make sure that it is in perfect working condition because air conditioners go through a lot of wear and tear. If you have a contractor that handles your air conditioner then call them now and set up an appointment to be cool this spring.

Check kids’ outdoor play areas - Cleaning and maintaining the area where your children will be playing for the next six months is so important.  Make sure to examine any playground equipment, such as swingsets, slides and monkey bars, for loose screws, splinters and other possible dangers.

Check out your attic - It is important to check the attic for leaks, mold and other areas that might be in disrepair due to a harsh winter.

Making sure everything in your house is clean and in tip-top shape during the spring and summer months is important for every homeowner.  It will allow you to enjoy the beautiful weather without worrying about the state of your home. It also will set you up for the harsher weather of the autumn and winter months and protect your house from wear and tear.

Meet Our Neighbor: Power Fitness

We are excited to feature Extravagant Realty's "Meet Our Neighbor" series.  Each month, we spotlight one of our fabulous North Shore business neighbors. This month, we have a workout with Power Fitness

To ring in a new century of fitness, lifetime Glen Head resident, Justin Miller, did one of his favorite things. He took action and opened Power Fitness in his hometown in January, 2000.

“When I was 19 years old, an amazing man named Tony Robbins indirectly saved my life,” says Miller. “Someone who worked for Robbins literally pulled me from a car wreck, brought me to the hospital and saved my life. He handed my mom his business card in the ER.  We lost that card and I never got a chance to thank him but, as a result, I took interest in, and began to study, Tony Robbins.”

Miller actually started out in the fitness business as a personal trainer when he was just 16 years old, after answering a help wanted ad for front desk help at a small gym in Syosset. “The owner was impressed with my knowledge and made me a personal trainer. I have expanded on that knowledge over the last 24 years of my life with many athletic achievements, certifications and working with thousands of people to help them improve their lives through fitness.”

What’s behind the name, “Power Fitness?” Miller explains: “Tony Robbins defines ‘power’ as the ability to take action. It’s one thing to know what to do but it’s another thing to do what you know. The power in our lives comes from taking action.”

Robbins wasn’t Miller’s only inspiration for lunging into the fitness business. “Jack LaLanne is my idol,” says Miller, “and before he died, I promised him I would carry on his life’s work.”

What Miller loves most about the fitness business is “the ability to make a positive contribution to people’s lives, often in very dramatic ways. Power Fitness is a warm place that cares about your results and wants you to come use the facility and make positive improvements in your life. This increases our energy here as well.”

Miller does not necessarily subscribe to all the latest and greatest fitness fads. “No need to reinvent the wheel,” he says. “Results always come down to the basics and fundamentals and following through.”

In fact, Miller says, “The most important piece of equipment at Power Fitness is called ‘inspiration,’ and it’s a powerful one. It can change your life and the lives of those around you.”

It’s hard not to be inspired at Power Fitness with more than 400 inspirational quotes lining the walls and equipment. “We have quotes everywhere,” he says. “In fact, we have more quotes than any other gym anywhere in the world,” says Miller. “Sometimes people come in just to read the positive quotes on the walls, floors, ceiling and equipment. It’s funny, but I love it, it makes me feel like all the positive energy is getting out there in the community and our world.”

Power Fitness has had a loyal following through the years, even with the onslaught of new gyms on the North Shore. “Hopefully every gym that opens inspires more people to get up off the couch and get fit,” he says. “Everyone is welcomed and celebrated at Power Fitness—young, old, fat and thin. At the end of the day, fitness is about getting results, so when people are serious about making a positive change and need to be inspired they seem to end up walking through our door. We are blessed with each person who comes in and are grateful to have them as part of our family.”

As for the future, like any business, the gym/fitness business has its challenges. But Miller’s outlook is unique. “The biggest challenges come from inside me. It’s always about growing more and expanding as an individual, and as you do that the world around you grows as well. The future always presents challenges but, as Einstein said, ‘It’s not that I’m smarter than everyone else, it’s just that I stay with the problem longer.’ Our society has a big problem with being unfit and unhealthy. Power Fitness is part of the solution. I believe if I continue to focus on helping people greater financial reward will come. When you give positive energy it comes back to you.”

And, while Miller does not have plans to physically expand his facility, he notes that Power Fitness is currently looking for individuals “who really want to make a change in their life through fitness. We want to expand by helping others grow. Each and every success story helps us grow and expand and all future success flows from that simple premise.”

Miller’s healthy approach to fitness and life also applies to his view of working with the local business community. “I believe in the TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) approach,” says Miller. “Glen Head is a beautiful little town. We get and give referrals to and from other local businesses all the time. For instance, newcomers Gem Craft Boutique and Extravagant Realty are great businesses and it’s an honor to be doing business in this truly special community with them. I wish them continued success and encourage all our members at Power Fitness and people in our community to check them out.”
